One thing that Artemis is known for is her rule over the moon. Many would look to her while traveling in the night. She illuminated the darkness for them to see.  

  Artemis is one of the few goddesses who are virgins. In fact, on her 3rd birthday one of her wishes was that she would never have to get married.

One follower of Artemis was named Callisto. She pledged to stay a virgin, but then broke it by falling for Zeus's suductions and bore his child. The child's name was Arcus, he survived Artemis's wrath. To punish her Artemis turned her into a bear. Zeus saved her by setting her image (as a bear) into the stars.

When Artemis turned three years old she asked Zeus for 5 things on her birthday:    1) that she would never have to marry    2) silver bow & arrows    3) dogs with floppy ears    4) stags to lead her chariot    5) nymphs as hunting companions (all of which remained a virgin like her)
